The research objective was to determine the diversity and distribution of types of
ectoparasites in rat (large mouse) in the area of AW. Sjahranie Hospital. Samarinda and its
surroundings.The research was conducted in the area of A Wahab Sjahranie Hospital Samarinda
and its surroundings using a trap method, followed by the identification and analysis of data in the
Laboratory of Biodiversity Science, FMIPA UNMUL Samarinda.The research results showed that;
(1) It was found eight kinds of ectoparasites (Echinulaelaps echidninus, Polyplax spinulosa,
Xenopsylla cheopis, Bovicola bovis, Dermacentor albipictus, Dermacentor andersoni,
Glycyphagus sp., and Carpoglyphus sp.) within the three types of host (Rattus norvegicus,
Sundamys muelleri, and Mus castaneus); (2) the diversity index of ectoparasites species was H '=
0.674, and Echinulaelaps echidninus and Polyplax spinulosa was the most dominant type of
ectoparasites found; and (3) the distribution or frequency of the presence of all kinds of
ectoparasites ranging from 5.88% - 17.65%. Type ectoparasites which has the highest frequency
of attendance is Polyplax spinulosa, Echinulaelaps echidninus, Xenopsylla cheopis, and
Glycyphagus sp.
