This nation must be built by giving priority to the development of
character, because character development is what will make Indonesia a great
nation, advanced, and the glorious and dignified. If this is not done, then this
nation becomes a nation of coolies. Character is spirit that contains the value of
virtue, character and moral values inscribed in man. Value system that is a fusion
of self-actualization of human potential in and internalization of moral values and
morals from outside the underlying thoughts, attitudes, and behavior. Character
awakened by itself, but must be established and cultivated through education.
Therefore, character education is an effort that must be done by Indonesia.
Character education is an integral part of education in Indonesia, which can be
defined as the value, manners, moral education, character education that aims to
develop students ability to provide decision good-bad, maintain what is good and
actualize that goodness in daily life with all his heart, in order to be a man who
has character in dimensional heart, mind, body, taste and intention. There are
some basic principles that must be developed in character education which
includes: organizing, education and learning process, school, and family as a
civilizing environment and character education that is multi-level, multi-channel,
and multi-setting. One of character education setting is through formal education.
Therefore, it is required the existence of a framework action plan. Alternative
strategies that can be developed in character education through teaching and
learning activities, school culture, and self-development activities as well as
family and community. Education is a tool that is considered by many people as
the most effective media to disseminate character. If today we are not satisfied
with the results of character education, then it is necessary to re-orientation of our
education; goals and teaching character. All parties must agree to the goals of
character education is behavior change of learners towards attitudes, habits, and
positive behavior that will form men/women who have good character, which is
reflected in the six pillars of character, namely: (1) honesty; (2) responsibilities;
(3) smart; ( 4) clean and healthy; ( 5) care; and (6) creative. In order to bear a
great nation, dignified Indonesia.
